About “batik”

Batik is a traditional dyeing process using wax to prevent dye from penetrating the cloth to create pattern. Since cotton textile unearthed in the Eastern Han Dynasty tomb in Niya prefecture of Hsinchiang Uighur Autonomous Region in China, batik is considered to have existed since the 2nd-3rd century. In Japan, as textiles were contained in the Shoso-in treasures, the existence is recognized since Tenpyō period. However it once ceased with the difficulty of beeswax import, it revived in Meiji period down to the present. Tanmono (roll of cloth) including kimonos are representative works. In addition, the yuzen dyeing in Kyoto also has a technique called “Roketsu-yuzen”, meaning batik.
